This is the last week for Pennies for the Pantry at FES. The silly string is ready to go...which teacher will get sprayed? Will it be Mrs. Boltz? Or maybe Mr. Schmitz? We will find out at our March Cougar Way Assembly next Monday!

The Middle School P.E. students have been actively participating in a variety of activities throughout the year. Recently, we began our archery unit. A special thank you to Matt Crayne of Chickasaw County Conservation for spending the time teaching our students archery safety and skills, along with providing equipment necessary for class. The students are very grateful for the opportunity to participate in this fun activity each year.

Our HS Biology students have been taking part in a variety of activities, including research on different proteins. Students then engaged in a “protein speed dating” activity for Valentine’s Day, looking for similarities and differences between proteins.🔬❤️ In another activity, students simulated how enzymes can speed up reactions, as well as factors that can slow down reactions. They did this by flipping pennies under different conditions. And, students got the opportunity to extract DNA from a strawberry mixture. They observed that DNA can be seen by the human eye—and it looks similar to snot! 😂

Anatomy students have been learning about the nervous system—and even dissected sheep brains!🔍 Students were responsible for creating their own lab reports, including the procedure they would use to dissect their specimen. They then identified certain structures within the brain based on what they learned in class. Great work!

Good morning everyone, We will be dismissing students 2 hours early today (Wednesday, March 19th). The wintry mix combined with the high winds is making travel to our north a bit dicey. No PM activities or practices tonight. Thanks everyone and travel safely.

In our 1st grade classroom, students have been voting in a March Madness-style bracket for their favorite books! 📚 Each day, Mrs. O'Brien reads two books from the classroom library, and each student gets to vote for their favorite book. The class then counts up the votes, compares the number of votes, and records the results by posting a picture of the winner. We will see which book is our champion at the end of March! 🏆

Mr. Carpenter's FCS students have been actively developing their culinary skills through hands-on experience in the kitchen. They have measured ingredients to prepare delicious cookies and pancakes, refined their knife skills by dicing onions and ham for omelets, and perfected the technique of making grilled cheese sandwiches. Beyond cooking, these students also emphasize the importance of cleanliness and teamwork by diligently washing dishes, wiping tables, and sweeping the floor—ensuring a well-maintained and organized kitchen environment. In addition to their culinary training, the first half of the course focuses on financial literacy. Students learn valuable life skills such as budgeting for major purchases like cars and homes, filling out job applications, crafting resumes, saving and investing money, and developing entrepreneurial expertise. Through this well-rounded curriculum, Mr. Carpenter’s students are gaining the knowledge and skills necessary for both personal and professional success.

Today at Fredericksburg Elementary the preschool students set up traps they made with their families and tried to catch a leprechaun. They had no such luck and they were left with a big mess to clean up! The lucky part was that the leprechauns left a tasty treat for the students as well as some gold coins! Maybe we’ll have better luck next year!

This past January, FES began an exciting new tradition that has quickly become a highlight of the week. Every Friday, The Cougar Coffee Company begins its day with students finding their aprons, gathering order binders and markers, and taking coffee orders from staff members. Staff members participate by using toy money as payment, making the experience both engaging and educational. Once orders are taken, students return to the Cougar Coffee Shop, where they organize and tally orders by color, ensuring the order makers can efficiently begin their work. The order makers carefully count the tallies, select the appropriate number of K-Cups from the corresponding colored bins, and brew each coffee individually using Keurig machines. Once brewed, they secure lids and place the completed drinks in designated baskets for the Delivery Crew. The Delivery Crew works in teams of two to three, with one student responsible for carrying orders and another assisting with doors. They rotate roles to ensure that every student has the opportunity to participate in different aspects of the process. Meanwhile, the Money Managers review completed order forms, retrieve payments from the teachers' pages in the order binders, calculate change, and distribute it accordingly. At the end of the day, the Cougar Coffee Company Manager compiles and shares the Weekly Brew Report with all staff. This report includes a thank-you message, the weekly favorite drink, recognition of a Cougar Coffee Company Star Student, total sales and profits, and a reminder that staff members who contribute to the program receive a handmade bracelet from the students. This initiative provides students with meaningful opportunities to develop vocational and real-life skills, including reading, counting, color recognition, money management, and teamwork. Additionally, it fosters important social skills by emphasizing collaboration and the value of each role in maintaining a successful business.

Yesterday at FES we only had one cook who was able to work, so Mr. Volker stepped right in and served food in the lunch line and cleaned tables. FES is lucky to have a principal who is always willing to support his staff. Thank you, Mr. Volker, for always putting your people first. "Real leadership is leaders recognizing that they serve the people that they lead." Pete Hoekstra Today, FES had only two cooks available to work, so Mr. Jurgenson jumped in to help serve. Thank you for helping your team!
